Know Before You Go

Pets are allowed on certain areas of Colonial Williamsburg property if they are on a leash and under direct control of the handler at all times. Specifically, pets are allowed in parts of the Historic Area including Duke of Gloucester Street, and the Visitor Center. Pets are not permitted in the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, Rockefeller Library, administrative buildings, on carriages, retail outlets, trade sites, historic buildings or in any site or Colonial Williamsburg owned facilities requiring an admission ticket. Both Chowning’s Tavern Garden and the Social Terrace at the Williamsburg Inn are pet-friendly establishments. Pets must be leashed at all times and under owner control. Guests will need to clean up after their pets and they cannot be allowed on the dining tables. Dangerous animals or animals that are not on a leash or otherwise under the control of their owner are prohibited. We reserve the right to request owners to remove a pet that is disrupting Colonial Williamsburg programming. Colonial Williamsburg hotels each have specific pet policies. Firearms and weapons are prohibited at Colonial Williamsburg. Only Colonial Williamsburg sworn security personnel and law enforcement officers are permitted to bring firearms or other weapons of any kind onto Foundation property or onto Foundation parking lots.

Closed caption televisions are available at the Williamsburg Inn, Williamsburg Lodge, and the Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel & Suites. Battery-operated strobe light fire alarms, TDD machines, amplifier headsets, and shake-awake alarm clocks are available at all hotel front desks.

Headsets with adjustable volume control are available for programs in the Hennage Auditorium of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg and the Virginia Room of the Williamsburg Lodge.

Upon request, Colonial Williamsburg will contract with a signing interpreter to accompany hearing-impaired guests through the Historic Area. Requests for this service must be made at least two weeks in advance. Call us at 757-220-7205 or email cwres@cwf.org.

Folding wheelchairs are available at the Visitor Center and may be rented on a first-come, first-served basis. No motorized chairs are available.

Guests with wheelchairs will find the streets, most gardens, and outdoor activities in the Historic Area accessible. While ramps and wheelchair lifts are available at selected exhibitions, many of the historic buildings require at least a few steps.

Most buildings in the Historic Area have steps, but most interior doorways are wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair. Many of the exhibition buildings have second floors that are interpreted, and stairs are often steep and narrow. Colonial Williamsburg’s buses are wheelchair accessible.
